The Speech Communication Program at Valdosta State University

Upon coming to college, I knew that I wanted to study Public Relations, because I used to watch a show called The Hills. On this show, there was a charismatic young lady on there, by the name of Erin. She worked for Elle Girl Magazine, and she was the head of the Public Relations department. I loved everything about her job, because she was able to work behind the scenes at fashion week and interview makeup artists, designers, and models. Not to mention, Elle Girl is a very popular magazine, which I also read.

When I registered for classes my freshman year, I made sure that I was taking classes that put me on the path to graduate with a Public Relations degree. This meant that I was officially a part of the Speech Communication Program. This is definitely one of the best decisions that I  have every made, as far as education is concerned.

I have learned so many things while in this program, that I will carry on with me forever. Some classes that have made a lasting impression on me are Public Speaking, Intro. to Public Relations, and Cross Cultural Communication. Public Speaking with Dr. Serini helped me to come out of my shell, and it decreased my fear of speaking in from of a large group of people. Introduction to Public Relations with Dr. Mitchell reassured me that Public Relations is the major for me, because I enjoyed learning about the different avenues one can take when in this career and the project I did at the end of the year is something I can see myself doing for a long time. Cross Cultural Communication with Dr. Robson is teaching me the different aspects of cultures around the world, and how to communicate with them. It is also teaching me to never assume that the way I act is not the only way the people of the world act.

I know that it is impossible to remember everything I learned during my four years here at Valdosta, but I will keep the most important things in my heart!
